Specialist Vascular Disease Screening For Reducing The Risk Of Memory Loss

This specialist clinic has been specifically designed for people over 50 with suspected or known risk factors for vascular disease which may increase their risk of memory loss. The aim is provide an assessment of cognitive function, identify risk factors for stroke, heart and other vascular disease and develop an action plan to reduce the likelihood of cognitive decline.  The screening will take approximately 3 hours and includes:

Specialist consultation with Dr Bob Fulcher or Dr Simon Shields to

  • Review the history and carry out an examination 
  • Explain the results of available tests and discuss and any other health issues
  • Provide recommendations on how to reduce the risk of cognitive decline

Physiological assessment

  • Lying and standing Blood pressure and heart rate 
  • Weight, height and body mass index measurement; waist circumference
  • Urinalysis to check kidney function and for infection
  • Heart assessment (Resting ECG)

Laboratory and other tests

  • Blood profile: blood count, random blood sugar, liver, kidney and thyroid function tests
  • Cholesterol/HDL Cholesterol and ratio
  • Carotid artery ultrasound: to look for evidence of atherosclerosis or narrowing (stenosis) of the internal carotid artery
  • Ultrasound of peripheral arteries including abdominal aorta
  • Brain Scan (either CT or MRI)

Specialist nurse assessment to provide

  • A review of medication and lifestyle factors 
  • A review of current diet and exercise
  • Measurement of lower limb arterial blood pressures to detect peripheral arterial disease 
  • A memory assessment using Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination-ACE-R

This clinic is not suitable for those who already have a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and who may require treatment or medication under specialist supervision


Following your visit, your consulting doctor and nurse will compile a brief summary written report. A more comprehensive report will be sent to you and your GP later and will include any outstanding investigation results as well as any further recommendations.
